Effect of inflow conditions on the source noise of large onshore wind turbines

Noise mitigation technologies on modern large scale wind turbines are mainly applied to reduce noise emission at the trailing edge. As a further possible noise contributor the atmospheric turbulence interaction with a wind turbine blade has been carried out. In the past, various studies on this noise phenomena has been conducted, but there are still limitation involved.
Within his research project in cooperation with Siemens Gamesa Cornelius has taken the current work on turbulent inflow noise of large scale wind turbines and continuing towards the derivation of an analytical noise prediction formulation. The dependency of atmospheric and site conditions as well as operational conditions of wind turbines are taken into account and validated in 2D acoustic wind tunnel tests. Later on the study will be extend to full scale rotor geometries.
Cornelius studied Aerospace Engineering at the University of Stuttgart (Germany) and Lunds Universitet (Sweden) and is specialized in aerodynamics, turbulence, numerical fluid dynamics, aeroacoustics and wind turbine blade design. His PhD project within the Marie Skłodowska‑Curie ETN Zephyr program in collaboration with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy considers the impact of inflow conditions on noise emission of large scale wind turbines and the validation of noise mitigation technologies.
